The play is an expressionist anti-war drama by the American playwright Irwin Shaw [author of The Young Lions and Rich Man, Poor Man] and dramatizes the action of six dead soldiers - during an unspecified war - who refuse to be buried. It was first staged in New York City in 1936 to great acclaim.

Upon These Boards proudly presented a large-scale production of this little known play in a production in New York City, staged in the Grand Hall at the historic Cooper Union Building. This 2005 benefit raised funds for a handful of World Peace organizations. ​

The cast included an ensemble of New York's finest working actors, and featured Kathleen Chalfant [esteemed theater & screen actor who created the role of Hannah Pitt in Angels In America] - Buck Henry [American treasure who wrote the screenplay The Graduate and co-wrote the screenplays Catch-22 and What's Up, Doc? ] - and Denis O'Hare [winner of the Tony Award, Drama Desk Award, and Tony & Emmy Award nominee.]
