Artistic Director Randall Stuart established Upon These Boards in 2001 to serve as a platform for a variety of theatrical creations, unique symposia, literary salons, musical concerts, and civic actions. The work began in San Francisco at the historic Haas Lilienthal House with an immersive promenade adaptation of Shakespeare's Pericles entitled Our Vessel Is of Tyre, with actors and audience moving throughout the enchanting space. More creative projects followed.

The company next focused on co-producing West Coast efforts for the Worldwide Theatrical Peace Event - Lysistrata Project, a revolutionary global offering of Aristophanes' play Lysistrata which took place in more than a thousand concurrent presentations - on one day and all over the world. Upon These Boards' version Lysistrata: Her Threefold Plan performed at Berkeley Repertory Theatre for two sold-out performances featuring a cast of 100 local performers, and was awarded the 2003 Bay Area Critics Circle Award.
More artful events followed, including: [Bay Area:] the epic tale of The Inkwell Communiqués and an exploration of T.S. Eliot's The Four Quartets - [Oregon:] A Lovely Day, an adaptation of Ghelderode's farce Pantagleize - [New York:] a large ensemble presentation of Irwin Shaw's antiwar play Bury The Dead at the historic Cooper Union Building auditorium, featuring Kathleen Chalfant, Buck Henry, and Denis O'Hare. From 2007 to 2020 artistic director Randall Stuart collaborated with a series of institutes and universities to create theatrical happenings, and original events & projects.

In 2023 activities recommenced for Upon These Boards on the East Coast with the discourse Finding Orangetown: a public address in Tappan, New York as part of the larger history-based project The Resplendent West. In 2024 the publication of Randall Stuart's manuscript Squire: The Chronicle of John Hardyng was presented in a live choral event in Ashland, Oregon, featuring members of the Oregon Shakespeare Festival acting company. An ambitious offering is in the works for 2027 and will soon to be announced.
