Randall Stuart is a fourth generation San Franciscan and recently uncovered remarkable details about his distant Dutch ancestors. As a little boy he listened in rapt attention to his grandfather George's stories of his haunted relatives, and it is from that particular point of view (a half-century since the hearing of it) that this genealogical epic unfolds. It's an American story of daring travel, deep kindness, and mythic ruin. In the 1600's the ancestors leave Holland to arrive on the shores of New Amsterdam, and in the 1800's they sail around Cape Horn in South America to arrive at the bracingly beautiful Buena Vista, and just in time for gold.
Mr. Stuart is presently a visiting researcher at
the Orangetown Historical Museum and Archives in Rockland County, New York.
He recently presented "Finding Orangetown" for the OHMA annual dinner,
hosted in the historical 76 House Tavern in Tappan, New York.
