THENCE, TO THE PLACE OF BEGINNING
Utilizing childhood memories and a scant few clues, author Randall Stuart (a fourth generation San Franciscan) recently uncovered remarkable details about his distant Dutch ancestors. As a little boy he listened in rapt attention to his grandfather George's stories of their haunted relatives, and it is from that peculiar point of view (a half-century since the hearing) that this genealogical epic unfolds. It's an American story of daring travel, deep kindness, and mythic ruin. The ancestors leave Holland to arrive on the shores of New Amsterdam in the 1620's, and two hundred years later they sail 'round South America's Cape Horn to arrive at the bracingly beautiful Buena Vista, just in time for gold.
Mr. Stuart is presently a visiting researcher at
the Orangetown Historical Museum and Archives in Rockland County, New York
(and is learning so much, thanks to the staff there.)
He is preparing a presentation for the OHMA annual dinner,
hosted in the historical 76 House Tavern in Tappan, New York.
