Artistic Director Randall Stuart

Randall Stuart’s work as a theatre artist and activist spans five decades at regional theaters, festivals, and universities, as well as the staging of large-scale benefits for the public good. Randall's productions have been seen on the stages of the American Conservatory Theater, Oregon Shakespeare Festival, Berkeley Rep, Seattle Rep, Portland Rep, Artists Rep, A Contemporary Theater, Word for Word Theatre Company, Bay Area Playwrights Festival, TheatreFirst, Encore Theater Company, Santa Cruz Shakespeare Festival & Portland Opera among others. 

Randall Stuart established the artistic producing platform Upon These Boards in 2001, and was awarded the 2003 Bay Area Critics Circle Award for Lysistrata Project: A Worldwide Theatrical Peace Event, in what was the largest staged rendition of Aristophanes' Lysistrata, performed at Berkeley Rep for two sold-out performances, and featuring a cast of 100 actors. Several pro-peace productions have followed, including: Johnny Johnson, Bury the Dead, The Inkwell Communiqués, and the revolutionary farce A Lovely Day.

Randall trained at the American Conservatory Theater [A.C.T.] in San Francisco (1974-79) and has been a visiting professor at a variety of theater training programs. His work as a teaching artist includes time at his alma mater A.C.T. - leading the Advanced Training Program in a series of productions of classical plays. He's been a teaching/directing guest artist at Southern Oregon University, Pacific University, University of California Santa Cruz, and the Berkeley Rep School of Theater. ​​

Mr. Stuart is the author of SQUIRE - The Chronicle of John Hardyng, which charts the path of an actor's investigation into a "character who wasn't there." ​In 2024 portions of the book were performed in concert with a notable cast of former company members of the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. In 2026 Randall's essay series Stage Door Foundling will launch on Substack. ​In 2027 his literary investigation into the 17th-century history of his Dutch ancestors in New Amsterdam - the series entitled The Resplendent West - will become available.

Randall founded the arts & humanities organization Cerimon House, directing its programming from 2007 thru 2020, and designed and introduced The Creative Path - an immersive & contemplative labyrinth curriculum. ​​​As a global citizen, Randall Stuart has participated in a wide range of human rights community benefits and World Peace demonstrations. He is featured in the documentary The Arms Race Within as a member of the Puget Sound Agape Community; and in the Brian Lindstrom documentary Alien Boy, The Life and Death of James Chasse as an eyewitness to an infamous execution of justice. Now positioned on the edge of the Hudson River he works on a sweeping ancestral epic, and feels quite fortunate to have lived a long life..."upon the boards"
